Guam-bound plane diverted
HONOLULU (AP) — A United Airlines flight from Honolulu to Guam was diverted to the remote island of Midway because of a mechanical issue.
The airline said Friday it flew the 335 passengers and 13 crew members from Flight 201 back to Honolulu. It put Guam-bound passengers on another flight to the U.S. territory.
The Boeing 777 was heading to Guam on Thursday when it was diverted. United says replacement aircraft brought passengers back to Honolulu Friday morning.
The Navy used the atoll 1,300 miles northwest of Honolulu as a base during the Cold War but left in 1996.
It’s now a national wildlife refuge home to more than 1 million seabirds, green sea turtles and endangered Hawaiian monk seals.
Invasive beetle found on Oahu
HONOLULU (AP) — Another destructive beetle has been found in west Oahu.
The state Department of Agriculture says a coconut rhinoceros beetle was found Monday at Campbell Industrial Park, the furthest west on the island the pest has been detected.
A two-mile buffer zone has been created in the industrial area. A beetle was found in a trap in May at Barbers Point. The beetle was first detected at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in December. The majority of other beetles found have been within a two-mile zone around the base’s golf course.
Officials have been working to trap the beetles, which can destroy coconut trees and other palm plants. More than 500 adult beetles have been found.
Police search for Maui inmate
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — Maui police are searching for an inmate who escaped the Maui Community Correctional Center.
The state Department of Public Safety says 40-year-old Junior Jorju was discovered missing during the 9:30 p.m. headcount Saturday. The facility was locked down, while officers searched for him inside and outside. Maui police were called to the scene.
Police say Jorju was serving a 14-day sentence for two misdemeanors: driving without a license and criminal contempt of court. He began his sentence on July 7 and was scheduled to be released July 20.
