The Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles is inviting the public to a blessing ceremony for its new labyrinth at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The newly installed labyrinth serves as a meditation tool — it is an archetype, a divine imprint, found in all religious traditions in various forms around the world. By walking the labyrinth, individuals can rediscover a long-forgotten mystical tradition.
“There are three stages in walking through a labyrinth,” said Holy Apostles’ Rector, the Rev. Moki Hino. “First, is purgation, or a releasing of the details of your life; second, is illumination at the center of the labyrinth, a time of receiving; and finally, union, as you come out of the labyrinth and integrate with God, one’s higher power or however one experiences the divine.”
The event will include a blessing ceremony and an opportunity for the public to walk the labyrinth, followed by pupus, refreshments and time for discussion.
“Walking the labyrinth is a very simple process,” Hino said. “There is only one path in and one path out; there are no dead ends. It is a great way to reflect on where we may be in our lives; comforting our sorrows or opening up our joys.”
The Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles is located at at 1407 Kapiolani St. in Hilo. For more information about the labyrinth or the open and affirming community of the church, call 935-5545.
