Aloha Performing Arts Company will host open auditions for its next mainstage production, the Gothic musical thriller “Jekyll and Hyde” at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at the Aloha Theatre.
If necessary, an invitational callback audition is slated for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12.
Auditions will consist of reading a speech provided from the script, learning a short movement routine in a group and singing individually. Those seeking lead, solo-singing roles, should prepare a short snippet of a song from the show — either “Someone Like You” or “Once Upon a Dream” for females, and “This is the Moment” for males.
For chorus members and those unfamiliar with the show, singing choices are “America, the Beautiful,” “The Star Spangled Banner” or “Amazing Grace.”
All first-round singing auditions will be kept to minimum length, about one minute. No experience is required and newcomers are encouraged to audition.
All roles are open, and include: Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, a baritone; Emma Carew, Jekyll’s fiancée, a soprano; Lucy Harris, the main attraction at “The Red Hat,” a mezzo-soprano; John Utterson, Jekyll’s lawyer and friend, a baritone; Sir Danvers Carew, Emma’s father and chairman of the Board of Governors, a baritone; Simon Stride, secretary of the board and Jekyll’s rival for Emma’s affections, a baritone; Lord Savage, board member, a tenor; Bishop of Basingstoke, a hypocritical clergyman and board member, a baritone/tenor; Lady Beaconsfield, board member, a mezzo-soprano; Sir Archibald Proops, board member, a baritone; General Lord Glossop, a pompous retired army man and board member, a baritone/bass; Spider, a pimp and proprietor of “The Red Hat,” a tenor; Guinevere, German manager of “The Red Hat,” non-singing; and Poole, Jekyll’s loyal manservant, non-singing.
In addition, a versatile chorus is needed, members of which will play aristocrats, London street people, prostitutes, servants, society guests, policemen, newsboys and customers.
“Jekyll and Hyde” is a Gothic musical thriller based on the novel “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was conceived for the stage by Steve Cuden and Frank Wildhorn, and features music by Wildhorn, a book by Leslie Bricusse, and lyrics by Wildhorn, Bricusse and Cuden.
APAC’s production will be directed by Jerry Tracy, assisted by Melissa Atwood. Musical direction is by Dale Ross, vocal direction by Kelly Ann Miles, and choreography by Nora Frank and Juanita Finkenberg. Producers are Ken Ross and Sara Hagen.
Those auditioning will be seen in small groups in order of arrival, and are encouraged to dress comfortably and wear closed shoes. Rehearsals, which begin Aug. 18, will generally be conducted Monday through Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
Production dates are Oct. 10-Nov. 2. Cast members must commit to the rehearsal schedule with a minimum of conflicts and to the entire performance run. Scripts and scores are available for onsite perusal or checkout in exchange for a deposit, by arrangement with APAC Operations Director Suzanne Murdock.
