Panaewa Alii

Panaewa Alii Football Association is accepting tackle registrations for the upcoming season.

 Divisions of play are Mitey-Mite (ages 7-9, weighing 45-90 pounds), Peewee (9-11, 75-120 or 12, 75-100) and Midgets (12-14, 105-170 or 15, 105-140).

Each participant is required to have a 2014 dated physical, copy of a birth certificate, medical card, fourth-quarter report card and wallet-size photo.  Participant’s age is determined on July 31.

Roll call begins at 3:45 p.m. Friday, followed by practice. 

Proper athletic attire and cleats is highly recommended.

Waiakea girls

volleyball tryouts

Waiakea girls volleyball will hold a player/parent’s meeting for tryouts at 5 p.m. Friday at the school gym.

Mandatory tryouts for junior varsity and varsity will be held from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Aug. 4-8 at the gym. Check-in will be at 3 p.m. Monday.

All student-athletes must be registered at Waiakea and have a current physical. All physical forms must be cleared by trainers.

This week, there is a voluntary summer open gym that includes a strengthening and conditioning program.

It runs  3:30-6:30 p.m.  Wednesday, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday and 3:30-6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Volcano Runs 

will be Aug. 16

The Volcano Rain Forest Runs will be held Aug. 16, with all three races starting and finishing at Cooper Center on Wright Road in Volcano Village.

Registration is ongoing for the half-marathon ($75), 10-kilometer run ($45) and 5K ($30). The prices will increase after Thursday.

Late registration and packet pick-up will be held from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 15 at Niaulani Campus in Volcano College, and there is no race-day registration for the half-marathon.

The half-marathon will start at 7 a.m., the 10K is at 7:45 a.m. and the 5K begins at 8 a.m.

Programs on tap 

for Hilo runners

Starting Wednesday, Big Island Running Company in Hilo will hold group runs every Wednesday (5 p.m.) and Saturday (6:30 a.m.).

In addition, the store is also starting its Couch to 5K program on Wednesday, and a separate training group is forming for anyone interested in running the Hilo Bay 5K on Sept. 7.

A training group for the Honolulu marathon will begin in the middle of August.

The store is hosting its grand opening Aug. 1-2 at 308 Kamehameha Ave., Suite 105.
