During the week of July 21-27, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 8; Kona, 5; Puna, 4; North Kohala and South Kohala, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 683 DUI arrests compared to 701 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.6 percent.
There have been 891 major accidents so far this year compared to 790 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.8 percent.
So far this year, there have been eight official traffic fatalities compared to 19 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.9 percent.
To date, five of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and two to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
