HONOLULU — Honolulu police are investigating an incident where an officer shot and killed a man in Waikiki.
The incident occurred about 8 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses at the scene said the driver almost hit an officer with his car, an account confirmed by Teresa Bell, spokesman for the Honolulu Police Department.
The driver also had an open container of liquor in his car, Bell said.
“The car sideswiped the bus and wouldn’t stop, and the cops were chasing the guy around, and they ended up shooting the guy five times,” witness Milysha Nelson said. “I was so close to it, I got scared.”
The car also struck a pole on the eastbound side of busy Kuhio Avenue before veering across the road, witnesses said.
The driver’s sedan landed on the sidewalk at a bus stop on Kuhio. Debris from the car was scattered across the street.
The shooting prevented tourists and residents from returning to their hotels and homes in the area for hours while authorities investigated.
An ambulance took the driver to the hospital, witnesses said.
Last year, police shot and killed a 22-year-old soldier in Waikiki. Police said the soldier, Pfc. Gregory M. Gordon, was shot after he repeatedly rammed multiple police cars with his truck, injuring several officers.
