Forecasters are expecting sustained winds of up to 75 mph as Hurricane Iselle makes landfall late this afternoon.
Tom Evans, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said increased winds and rain should begin around 4 p.m.
Iselle will weaken to a tropical storm as it passes over the Big Island. Conditions are expected to normalize after 6 a.m. Friday.
Rainfall will total 5 to 8 inches over a 6- to 8-hour period, Evans said.
Windward areas will see the most impact from storm surges.
Surf is expected to be between 15 and 25 feet, with 1 to 3 feet of surge above normal.
Currently, Hurricane Julio is expected to pass the island to the northeast Sunday as a tropical storm.
