During the week of July 28-Aug. 3, police arrested 29 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

During the week of July 28-Aug. 3, police arrested 29 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 10; Puna, 9; South Kohala and South Hilo, 4 each; and Ka‘u and Hamakua, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 712 DUI arrests compared to 724 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.7 percent.

There have been 923 major accidents so far this year compared to 813 during the same period last year, an increase of 13.5 percent.

So far this year, there have been eight official traffic fatalities compared to 19 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.9 percent.

To date, five of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: three to drugs and two, a combination of alcohol and drugs.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
