challenge at UHH

The University of Hawaii at Hilo boosters will host its second Aha Paiea Keiki Sports Challenge from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at the school’s gym.

The camp is open to keiki ages 7-12 and is limited to the first 120 registrants.

According to a release, “Participants will get a unique opportunity to learn the fundamentals of basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball and tennis taught by coaches and players of UHH.”

The cost is $5 and each participant will receive lunch and a camp T-shirt.

Sunrise Athletics

Sunrise Athletics will hold its “Ready-2-Run Youth Cross-Country Program” for grades 1-8.

The season starts Monday and runs through Oct. 30 and caters to all levels of abilities.

According to a release, the program works toward “building character while developing the athlete in every child!”

Oahu marathon

training program

Big Island Running Company is offering a free program for runners training for the Dec. 14 Honolulu Marathon

The program starts with an introductory meeting at 5 p.m. Aug. 20 at the new Big Island Running Company on Hilo Bayfront, with a short run to follow.

Runs will be scheduled to coincide with group runs at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and a long run at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Golf tourney at Hilo Muni

The Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island will hold its eighth annual Annual Tee-Off for Kids Golf Fundraiser on Saturday at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Registration is at 6 a.m., and there will be a 7 a.m. shotgun start.

Arm wrestling

at Hilo Civic

An arm wrestling competition will be held Saturday at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Armageddon weigh-ins will be held from 8:30-10:30 a.m., and the free event runs from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Divisions are teen (12-15, 16-17) and men and women for 105, 145, 175, 205, 240, open heavyweight and masters (45 and older).

Youth volleyball

The Department of Parks and Recreation will be offering an instructional volleyball season for boys and girls ages 5-8 years old.

The instructional season will include drills for beginners and also modified volleyball games.
