Firemen extinguished a blaze at the Hawaiian Cane Products plant early this morning before the fire spread from the dryer to other sections of the building. The whole forward part of the dryer was on fire, firemen said. Employes turned hoses on the blaze as soon as it broke out. When the firemen arrived, it took them about a half an hour to completely extinguish the fire. Firemen said the blaze was probably caused by overheating. William F. Goldsmith, production manager, said the fire damaged some boards and did minor damage to equipment.

The Hilton Hotel chain will build a 150-room hotel in Kona on the Williams property south of Kailua. Word of the hotel chain’s plans were received yesterday by County Chairman Helene Hale from Edwin K. Hastings, executive vice president of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Called by the Tribune-Herald this morning, Hastings confirmed plans for the hotel in Kona. “We think Kona is the greatest. It is the oldest resort in the Islands outside of Waikiki.”
An announcement about the Kona hotel plans is planned for tomorrow. From another source it was learned Haas and Haynie, the general contractor for the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel near Kawaihae, will be the construction firm for the new Hilton hotel. Hastings, at the invitation of Hale, toured possible sites in Hilo for hotel development earlier this year. Asked about plans for Hilo, Hastings said “We’re still interested.”

With the assistance of a grant from the Hawaii Interactive Television Service Development fund, the University of Hawaii at Hilo will be hosting a telecommunications conference tomorrow and Thursday. HITS is a four-channel, closed circuit, statewide television system reserved by the FCC for education, training and management conferencing. Under construction now, HITS is expected to begin statewide operation late this year. HITS is designed to link the campuses of the University of Hawaii system and provide live, interactive communication to students and government agency personnel.
Jim Bannon, computer, math and technology specialist for Honolulu District, sees a HITS role in delivering foreign language, advanced courses and electives to students who cannot be served on their own campuses. The conference, “The Art of Telecommunication,” will be hosted on two successive days from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. … It is anticipated that UH-Hilo will be linked to the HITS system in early 1990. The University of Hawaii and Hilo’s Center for Continuing Education and Community Service program expect to train approximately 60 faculty and professional staff members at the conference.
