Eight years ago, Verna Duarte, owner of Puna Rentals Inc., wanted to do something in memory of a dear friend who lost his life in a tragic accident on a Labor Day weekend a year before.

She organized an event to raise awareness for safety on island roads, and every August since the Dare 2 Care Safety Sign Waving Campaign is hosted a week before the busy Labor Day weekend.

The Makamaka Ola Motorcycle Club is helping with the event and asking all motorcycle clubs, car clubs, bicyclists and the public to join them and show their support.

The event will be from 11 a.m.-noon Saturday along Kamehameha Avenue, fronting the Kamehameha statue in Hilo.

“Rain or shine, we will be out there,” Duarte said. “There will be signs available, but we welcome all safety signs.”

Because of the ongoing construction on Kamehameha Avenue, motorists are asked to be cautious while passing the area Saturday and honk their horns in support.
