During the week of Aug. 11-17, police arrested 20 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

During the week of Aug. 11-17, police arrested 20 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 8; South Hilo, 5; Puna, 3; South Kohala, 2; Ka‘u and North Hilo, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 746 DUI arrests compared to 789 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.4 percent.

There have been 980 major accidents so far this year compared to 858 during the same period last year, an increase of 14.2 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine official traffic fatalities compared to 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.1 percent.

To date, five of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and two to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
