During the week of Aug. 18-24, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

During the week of Aug. 18-24, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 12; Kona, 7; South Kohala, 6; and Puna, 1.

So far this year, there have been 772 DUI arrests compared to 817 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.5 percent.

There have been 1,014 major accidents so far this year compared to 891 during the same period last year, an increase of 13.8 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine official traffic fatalities compared to 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.1 percent.

To date, six fatalities of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and another three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
