A lava flow that could threaten homes around Pahoa has exited a ground crack, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
HVO reported the flow has formed a small pad of lava over the crack, and is about seven miles from the Pu‘u ‘O‘o vent and two miles from the eastern boundary of the Wao Kele o Puna Forest Reserve.
The flow is moving in a northeast direction and is being watched closely by public safety officials and scientists.
Hawaii County and HVO officials held a meeting about the flow Monday at the Pahoa Community Center. Another meeting will be held there at 6:30 p.m. today and Thursday.
