HONOLULU (AP) — A wildfire that forced the evacuation of about 20 homes in Makakilo more than a week ago is flaring up again, prompting firefighters to take a stand by the structures to protect them from the flames.
High winds whipped up the stubborn fire Sunday.
No homes have been evacuated, but Honolulu Fire Department Capt. James Todd said about 10 companies are on scene to battle the blaze.
The fire was started Aug. 22 by two 7-year-old twin brothers playing with a lighter. It has burned about 1.5 square miles, or 1,000 acres, of steep forested land.
About 20 homes along Umena Street were evacuated for three days after the fire erupted.
