HONOLULU (AP) — The nonprofit organization that fundraises to support Hawaii’s public university system raised a record-breaking $98.6 million in the fiscal year.
The University of Hawaii Foundation said Tuesday the money was raised between July 1, 2013, and June 30 for the system’s 10 campuses statewide.
The foundation says the record-breaking amount was largely because of a $40 million award that was the largest private foundation gift the university has ever received. The Simons Foundation donated the money to support two professors researching microscopic organisms in the ocean.
Without the Simons Foundation gift, nearly 60 percent of the $58.6 million raised came from Hawaii corporations, foundations and individuals.
The foundation said $46 million of the donations were aimed at research and $19 million for student aid.
