Tennis tourney at Kanaka‘ole

A “World Team Tennis” tournament featuring men’s, women’s and mixed doubles matches will be held Saturday at Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium.
The team tournaments start at 9 a.m. and will run all day long, while the open division begins at 6 p.m.
The registration deadline is Wednesday — forms are available by emailing Flavio Nucci at Flavio737@hotmail.com — and late entries will be accepted by phone at 443-7750.
The entry fee is $20 and admission is free.
Proceeds go toward Hui Kako`o Kenika, an organization started to support the local tennis community.
Volleyball leagues on tap in Waimea
Parks and Recreation in Waimea will take registration for age-group volleyball leagues at 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Thelma Parker Gym.
A clinic will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday for ages 9-10 and a 4:30 p.m. clinic will be held for ages 11-12 and 13-14.
The league will run Oct. 14 to Nov. 19 at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in October and Mondays and Wednesday in November.
The fee, payable to Waiamea Athletics, is $10.
Volunteer coaches are needed.

RBI softball, baseball sign-ups
The Nobu Yamauchi 18-under RBI girls softball and 13-18 boys baseball teams are accepting teams or individual players to participate in their Winter League.
Games will start in mid-October and end in mid-December. Girls games will be played on Sundays while the boys will be playing during the weekdays.

HGEA tennis set for Sunday
The Hawaii Government Employees Association will hold tennis play from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium.

Kamehameha cheer camp
Kamehameha-Hawaii will be hosting a fall youth cheer camp Oct. 17-19.
The camp runs 3:30-5:30 p.m. Oct. 17 and 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Oct. 18-19 for boys and girls in kindergarten through the fifth grade.
Registration is $55 per participant and will be accepted until the first day of camp.
According to a release, “participants will receive personalized instruction on stunting, team-building, cheers, jumps, dances and tumbling.”

Hilo Vulcan Boosters
The Hilo Vulcan Booster Club’s monthly luncheon will be held at noon Tuesday at Coqui’s Hideaway Restaurant on Kamehameha Avenue in Hilo.
Guest speakers for the first lunch of the school year will be the cross country team and the women’s volleyball team.
The cost of the lunch is $15 per person.

Shining at SHOPO
Hawaii Island police rebounded in the open division at the SHOPO State Basketball Tournament Aug. 30-31 on Kauai.
Big Island came back from a first-round loss to beat “Run N Gun” from Oahu 43-27.
The Big Island team was led by Roland Kuamoo with 12 points, followed by 11 from Chuck Cobile. Team captain Aaron Kaleo, and Josh Flores each added 9 points.
Making the All-Star team from the Big Island were Aaron Kaleo and Roland Kuamoo. Josh Flores had the assignment of defending “Run N Gun’s” Chris Young, a former UHH player .
Flores earned Most Valuable Player in the open division.
Keiki Triathlon
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Hawaii Isle Police Activities League will hold the third annual Keiki Triathlon as part of the Mayor’s Health Fest 2014 on Oct. 18, at Old Kona Airport Park.
Children ages 7 to 14 are invited to participate in a miniature version of the Ironman World Championship: 100-yard swim, 3.2-mile bicycle race and 1-mile run. The 7- and 8-year-olds will race half those distances.
The entrance fee is $5 per child. Registration ends Oct. 3. Forms are available at county swimming pools, gymnasiums and other staffed recreational sites, or can be downloaded at hawaiicounty.gov/parks-and-recreation.

To ensure the athletes’ safety, enrollment will be limited to the first 30 children who sign up in each of the four age-group divisions or a maximum of 120 racers. Participants must supply their own bicycle, helmet, swim goggles and other equipment.
Racers must check in by 7:30 a.m. race day. The youngest children will start the triathlon by entering the Kona Community Aquatic Center pool at 8 a.m.
The Health Fest will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.
Waipio Challenge
The Brantley Center will host its third 30K Waipio Challenge on Oct. 18, with all three races — there is also a 5-kilometer runs and half-marathon — starting at the Honokaa sports complex at 6:30 a.m.
The races benefit the Brantley Center.

Waiakea coach openings
Waiakea High School is taking applications for a girls basketball coach and a girls water polo coach.
Applications can be picked at the school office during business hours (Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.).
The deadline to turn in an application is 4 p.m. Sept. 15.

Sept. 22 tennis event
The East Hawaii District Tennis Association is again hosting an event to promote adult tennis from 6-10 p.m. Sept. 22 at Edith Kanaka‘ole Stadium.
“Got Game” is free and open to anyone 18 years or older.
The event is from beginner to players with a 2.5-3.0 rating.
Participants are asked to bring water, wear tennis shoes and bring a racquet.
Holes in one
Harry Kubojiri aced the 181-yard 16th hole Sunday using a 7-rion at Volcano Golf & Country Club.
Christopher Gali, Derek Pacheco and Jimmy Day witnessed Kubojiri’s first hole-in-one.
—Earl Mineshima aced the 130-yard third hole with a 3-utility club Aug. 30 at Volcano.
Janet Nishiki, Calvin Arthur and John Kau and Manny Carreon witnessed Mineshima’s first hole-in-one.
—Nick Cerra used a 5-hybrid for a hole-in-one Aug. 20 on the 163-yard 13th hole at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.
Witnessing Cerra’s first ace were Mike Middlesworth, Colin McIver and Leroy Costa.
Setting the record straight
Honokaa football player Jodice Popovich-Pung’s name was misspelled in the Aug. 30 edition.
Popovich-Pung is a 5-foot-8, 120-pound junior defensive end for the Dragons.
