Lavaroots Performing Arts will present “Yankady, Here is Good?” at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at the Palace Theater in Hilo.
“Yankady, Here is Good?” is a dynamic theatrical dance production that challenges and expresses how we are living on the planet as a humanity today. The production is based in traditional West African dance and music while incorporating contemporary elements and Western instrumentation. It is an original work written and directed by master drummer and dancer Gabriel Fara Tolno and the founder of Lavaroots Performing Arts, Michal Anna Carrillo.
Featured performers are master artists Tolno and Naby Bangoura of the national ballet of Guinea, Les Merveilles de Guinea. Tolno and Bangoura currently live in the United States and travel extensively, nationally and internationally, teaching and performing. Also joining the cast is percussionist Sekou Camara, currently living on Oahu and also from Guinea, West Africa; percussionist David Chapman of California; internationally renowned and classically trained dance artist Shizuno Nasu; and the Big Island’s own Lavaroots Dance and Drum Company.
In addition to the Palace Theater performance, Lavaroots is collaborating with visiting artists and will offer workshops and performances at schools across the island.
