Union: Don’t punish officer
HONOLULU (AP) — The president of the Honolulu police officers’ union says an officer should not be punished because his gun discharged in the bathroom of a Target store.
Tenari Maafala said the shooting was an accident and no crime was committed.
The officer’s gun fired Saturday night in the bathroom of the store in Salt Lake. No one was injured.
The police department is investigating to determine whether the officer should be disciplined. He remains on patrol duty.
Maafala says the officer made an honest mistake and the shooting was an unfortunate situation that happened to a good officer on the force for two years.
Maafala says there was no cover-up and police officers need to make a full investigation before filing reports available to the public.
Homeless camp
lease approved
HONOLULU (AP) — A Hawaii board has approved the lease for a temporary encampment for homeless people in Honolulu.
The lease for the voluntary encampment on Sand Island was approved Friday.
City officials say it should be operational in two or three months. They envision a triage center where homeless families can access services.
Critics say homeless people are being shooed out of sight to go to a dry, isolated area away from their communities.
Parts of Sand Island have been used as a dump and as an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. The island is now mostly industrial and has a wastewater treatment plant and some parks.
Some area residents and companies are concerned about security, but officials say the camp will have two guards onsite around the clock.
Woman in fatal crash sentenced
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — An 83-year-old Kapaa woman in a 2013 crash that killed a motorcycle driver has been sentenced to probation and ordered to pay $8,087.61 restitution for funeral expenses.
Charlotte Smith Kaui on Thursday also was granted her request for deferred acceptance of her no-contest plea.
She will be allowed to request that charges be removed from her criminal record if she completes probation terms.
Smith Kaui on June 2 pleaded no contest to misdemeanor negligent homicide.
Prosecutors say Smith Kaui on July 20, 2013, made a left turn from Kuhio Highway and collided with 52-year-old motorcyclist Thomas Gregory Newsom.
She was first charged with negligent homicide and inattention to driving.
