HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaiian Electric Co. says it’s working on repairs to an out-of-service generating facility that caused the utility to ask Oahu customers to curb evening usage.
The utility through nine days has issued two notices asking Oahu customers to conserve energy between 5-9 p.m.
A HECO spokesman said its Kalaeloa plant has a leak in one of its oil-fired boilers that will take two or three days to repair.
Darren Pai says a successful repair will restore about half of the plant’s generating capacity.
He says the plant also has a problem with its connection to the power grid and repairs could take two weeks.
He says the margin is thin for supplying all of Oahu’s power needs without the plant.
