Congregations of East Hawaii churches invite the public to join in prayer services on behalf of the residents of Puna at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Pahoa Community Center pool parking lot at 15-2910 Puna Road, Pahoa.
“Come join the churches in the Puna area for a time of prayer over the lava flow,” said Pastor Morris Niimi. “Everyone is invited. Bring umbrellas, due to sun or rain, and chairs, if you need to sit.” For more information, contact Niimi at 965-0006 or morrisniimi@msn.com.
The following week in Hilo, the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles will host a “Prayers for Puna Gathering” beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, at the church at 1407 Kapiolani St.
The gathering will be held around the church’s newly installed candlelit labyrinth and will feature prayers and readings from a variety of faith traditions. The labyrinth is a meditation tool, which offers opportunities for individuals to reflect on the wonders and mysteries of life.
“There is a deep need for healing and peace, so regardless of how one knows and experiences the divine, there is a real call for us to gather as a community and to send our love to the people and the area of lower Puna. All are welcome,” said the Rev. Moki Hino, rector of the Church of the Holy Apostles.
Guests are invited to walk the labyrinth after the prayer gathering. For more information about the Prayers for Puna gathering and about the open and affirming community of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles, call 935-5545.
