HONOLULU (AP) — About 2,500 Hawaii Army National Guard soldiers will hold training next weekend to make up for drills cancelled by a budget shortfall earlier this month.
The Hawaii National Guard said Friday Congress approved a shift of funds at the National Guard Bureau to enable the drills to go forward.
The monthly drills were initially scheduled for Sept. 6-7. But they were cancelled when the Hawaii National Guard didn’t receive $1 million from the Guard Bureau for training as expected.
Overall, the National Guard Bureau suffered a $101 million funding shortfall. National Guard drills were cancelled across the country as a result.
10 years for bank robbery
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — A man who pleaded no contest to robbing a Kapaa bank has been sentenced to a decade in prison.
Joshua Michael Carlsen, 37, will be required to serve at least six years and eight months before he can be considered for release.
Prosecutors say Carlsen on Jan. 29 entered the Bank of Hawaii in Kapaa with a hood pulled up and presented a note to a teller demanding money. The note said he had a gun but no weapon was brandished.
He was arrested that night along Kuhio Highway.
Police recovered $5,074 from Carlsen’s home. He was ordered to pay restitution for $2,914.72 that was not recovered.
Carlsen had previously served prison time for a heroin and attempted murder convictions.
Man charged in fatal beating
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — A 19-year-old Kihei man has been indicted in the beating death of a homeless man.
Kekaimalu Cacpal was arrested Wednesday.
He’s the second person charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of 44-year-old Michael Phillip Gray at a Kalama Park in Kihei.
Gray was found unconscious March 15 at a park pavilion. He died April 11.
An autopsy concluded he had fractures to his face, both sides of his skull and both sides of his ribs.
Police say a witness identified Cacpal as one of three men who punched, kicked and stomped Gray.
A second man, 18-year-old Kaniela Dutro, also is charged with murder in the case.
A suspect who was 15 at the time of the attack is under Family Court jurisdiction.
