During the week of Sept. 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 11 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 6; Puna, 2; South Hilo, South Kohala and Ka‘u, 1 each.
So far this year, there have been 842 DUI arrests compared to 935 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.9 percent.
There have been 1,131 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,004 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.6 percent.
So far this year, there have been nine official traffic fatalities compared to 21 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.1 percent.
To date, six of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
