“USO: Understand, Strengthen and Overcome” is the mission of a group of men from Samoa and New Zealand who are riding around the Big Island this week with the support of PATH — Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii.
The USO riders are taking on this challenge to raise awareness for men’s health and wellness in the wake of their own fathers’ passing away because of cancer. The term “uso” means “brother” in Samoan. It is the bonds of brotherhood that bring these men together and give them the motivation and strength to share their stories with other men and their families.
“The message is that men need to take care of themselves in order to be strong for their families and their communities,” said Tina Clothier, PATH’s executive director.
Bicycling is the way the USO riders stay fit and healthy and their journey has taken them across all of New Zealand as well as the islands of Samoa.
As the USO riders make their way around the Big Island, they will share their story with groups in Kona, Waimea, Volcano and Hilo. PATH members and friends have opened their homes for the riders to stay.
