During the week of Sept. 22-28, police arrested 21 motorists for DUI.

Ten of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and South Hilo, 7 each; Puna, 5; and Ka‘u, 2.

So far this year, there have been 863 DUI arrests compared to 977 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.7 percent.

There have been 1,150 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,032 during the same period last year, an increase of 11.4 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine official traffic fatalities compared to 22 during the same period last year, a decrease of 59.1 percent.

To date, six of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and another three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
