Reginald Pono Awaa, 53, of Mountain View died Sept. 21 at Ka‘u Hospital. Born in North Kohala, he was a heavy equipment operator and cowboy. Benjamin Kalulehua DeFreitas Sr., 90, of Hilo died Sept. 4 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired heavy equipment operator for Honolulu Iron Works and a member of Hilo Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Ralph T. Nishioka, 90, of Hilo died Sept. 26 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired safety coordinator for Jas. W. Glover Ltd. and member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, former first aid instructor for the American Red Cross, former Cub Scout leader, and a U.S. Army World War II veteran, serving as a Military Intelligence Service (MIS) interpreter.
