Coming off a breakthrough performance, the University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s soccer team fell into some old habits.
Kelly Keyran scored midway through the second half Monday, leading Azusa Pacific to a 1-0 victory against the Vulcans.
The Vulcans (3-6-1, 1-4 Pacific West Conference) fell to 1-1 on their homestand. They rode a more aggressive style to 2-1 victory Saturday against Point Loma, but two days later they failed to score for the fourth time in five matches.
“At the end of the night it comes down to finishing your chances,” dorectir of soccer Lance Thompson said in a university release. “We had a couple of great looks early. Their keeper made a fabulous save that kept them in it. If that goes in for us that changes the whole element of the game.”
“It’s a great game, just two different strategies.”
Playing a Cougars team that favored ball-control, UHH put all six of its shots on frame. A pair of Azusa goalkeepers combined on the shutout.
Luke Ackerman assisted on Keyran’s goal for the Cougars (5-2, 2-1).
Erick Lemus made four saves for the Vulcans.
The women’s match was played to a a scoreless draw.
Jenna Hufford made seven saves for the Vulcans (5-2-3, 2-1-2). The Cougars (2-6-1, 0-2-1) earned their first point in league play and held a 9-3 advantage in shots.
“Jenna came up huge tonight,” Thompson said. “She was without a doubt the difference.
