Wailoa Center’s exhibits for October drew a large crowd opening night in the main gallery, which is jam packed with art to satisfy a wide variety of interests for its visitors.

Woods used in furniture, sculpture and functional objects fashioned by artisans from around the Big Island are on exhibit. Also, abstract paintings by Philippe Francois Nault and pit-fired ceramic vessels by Volcano artist Tim Freeman are on display.

A large focus of the gallery is dedicated to the Big Island Ukulele Guild’s annual exhibit of one-of-a-kind ukuleles made by guild members about the past year.

The highlight of the opening night was the free ukulele raffle giveaway, which was won by Daniel O’Connor and presented by Big Island Ukulele Guild member and exhibit coordinator Bob Gleason and Hilo Guitars and Ukuleles which donated the ukulele.

A Kanikapila with Andy Andrews and Mike Purdue is slated for noon-3 p.m. Saturday, and one last ukulele will be raffled off in a free drawing.

Wailoa Center is a Division of State Parks, Department of Land and Natural Resources. It is free and open to the public 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and noon-4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The center is normally closed Saturdays, Sundays and state holidays.
