Kahilu Theatre in Waimea presents “Stars of American Ballet” at 7 p.m. Thursday.
This night at the ballet offers top-notch choreography with principal and soloist-level dancers from major American companies.
New York City Ballet principal dancer Daniel Ulbricht directs and performs with a select ensemble of ballet stars. Thursday’s program includes “Swan Lake” excerpts and “Who Cares” by George Balanchine, “Liturgy” by Christopher Wheeldon and additional choreography by Jerome Robbins and others.
Ulbricht was born in St. Petersburg, Fla., and began his dance training at the age of 11. At age 16, he was invited by the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet, to continue his training. In December 2000, he became an apprentice with New York City Ballet and in November 2001 he joined the company as a member of the corps de ballet.
In January 2005, he became a soloist, and subsequently principal dancer in May 2007. Currently, Ulbricht is the artistic advisor of Manhattan Youth Ballet and associate artistic director of New York State Summer School for the Arts in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He’s also founder and director of “Daniel Ulbricht and Friends,” a dance ensemble devoted to presenting high caliber dance performances, as well as education and outreach programs.
