As the June 27 lava flow continues to threaten Puna, many residents are preparing to evacuate. Some will be moving to other islands or to the mainland and would like to take their pets.
As the June 27 lava flow continues to threaten Puna, many residents are preparing to evacuate. Some will be moving to other islands or to the mainland and would like to take their pets.
However, the added cost of travel with pets can result in some people leaving their pets behind or surrendering them to the Humane Society, where they might be euthanized if a home cannot be found.
The Good Shepherd Foundation contacted Hawaiian Airlines with a request for pet fare assistance for people traveling to neighboring islands or the mainland. Hawaiian Airlines replied that it will handle requests on a case-by-case basis and that anyone who thinks they have a special need is welcome to register their request using the following link: http://hawaiianair.custhelp.com/app/ask/c/372.
Keep in mind pets need a health certificate within 10 days of travel to the mainland, and other state restrictions could apply. Pets need a carrier with a couple of inches of head room, too.
Check with the airline to get details and apply for fare assistance.
