HONOLULU (AP) — State officials say a tiger shark bit a woman’s paddleboard in waters off Maui and knocked her into the ocean.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources said Wednesday two women were riding stand-up paddleboards in 5 to 6 feet of water off Kihei when one saw a shark approach her friend’s board. The woman saw the shark bite the tail end of her friend’s board and knock her into the water.
No one was injured.
The close encounter follows two other shark incidents this week. Each happened in water turned murky brown by runoff from Hurricane Ana.
Department Chairman William Aila says these incidents should remind people to stay out of murky water and areas affected by runoff.
