Scrutiny needed
Regarding cesspools conversions: As one who installs cesspools and septic systems for a living, the new proposal to convert cesspools to septic systems and require only septic systems in the future is good news and will give us some job security for the time being.
The cost for a septic system is more than double the cost of a cesspool. However, as a man of commonsense, I feel there needs to be more studies done on the effect of waste or organic materials from cesspools on our water tables.
I agree that properties near the water’s edge need to meet septic system requirements, but the Department of Health needs to show proof of its claims before enacting laws that will cost millions of dollars to the residents of Hawaii. These proposals need to be scrutinized.

‘Excellent response’
Thank you for publishing Barry Taniguchi’s excellent response to Nelson Ho and the other opponents of the Thirty Meter Telescope project (Tribune-Herald, Oct. 19).
All due respect has been given to those with concerns about the TMT’s impact on Mauna Kea. Now it’s time to give all due respect to science and the important contributions the telescope will make to mankind.

Do it at night
Once again it took me one hour to get from Highway 11 to Paradise Drive in Hawaiian Paradise Park by way of Highway 130 (of course.) I appreciate improving one of the Big Island’s busiest roads, but could they please do the work late at night when there is less congestion? It really wears a person out after a long day at work.

Build a bridge
Well, we escaped the tropical storm. Now comes the lava situation. The county government has not mentioned this lately. Their solution for the temporary bypass roads, Railroad and Beach, is flawed because the lava could flow to the ocean.
The Chain of Craters road is not a suitable solution, because it would take over 2 1/2 hrs to get from lower Puna to Hilo. That means driving time of over five hours each day. Not acceptable.
Whatever happened to the most reasonable solution? Building a bridge across the flow. That would do two things. Relieve traffic and draw tourism.
