The Kahilu Theatre in Waimea and Hilo’s Palace Theater will celebrate Halloween with the dark comedy cult classic film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
The Kahilu presentation will be start with a pre-party at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, with the music of DJ Brian Thomas, a photo booth, food, drink and bags of props for purchase. At 7 p.m., there will be a costume contest on stage, with prizes for the scariest, funniest, audience favorite and more, followed by a magic show by The Great Barusky. The film starts at 8 p.m. with audience participation invited and mayhem expected.
Rice, newspaper, flashlights, rubber gloves, party hat, noisemakers and cards — not the normal list of things to bring to the movies, but, then again, this is not your normal night at the movies.
The mayhem begins with the audience joining in the wedding scene by throwing rice as the newlyweds exit the church. There are numerous ways to participate in the film throughout the night and Kahilu will have bags of props for sale, along with guides on how to participate.
No water guns, hot dogs, prunes or food will be allowed in the auditorium, other than unbuttered toast and dry rice.
Bags will be checked at the door and no outside food, beverages, or prohibited props will be allowed. This movie is rated R, those ages 17 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The Palace showing is on Halloween Night, Friday, Oct. 31. Doors open at 8 p.m. and a costume contest is at 8:30 p.m. emceed by Yisa Var.
Showtime is at 9 p.m. and there will be a dance party afterward until midnight with the band “Ghouls Nite Out.” They’ve been practicing “Time Warp,” so the “Rocky” fun won’t stop when the movie is pau.
Participation kits with all you will need to actively enjoy the movie and specials in the café will enhance all the campy fun.
Tickets are $12 in advance and for those in costume. Door prices for those in street clothes is $14.
