HONOLULU (AP) — Three cases of measles have been confirmed in Hawaii.
The state Department of Health says two are on Kauai and one is on Maui.
The department says the cases are not related and have separate travel histories. But they involve unvaccinated young adults with recent travel to the Philippines, Indonesia or Malaysia.
There were two Oahu cases reported in February. One involved an infant who returned from the Philippines and the other involved a 2-year-old who was exposed during a visit to a pediatrician’s office.
Measles is highly contagious. It’s spread by direct contact with mucus from the nose and throat and by airborne respiratory droplets.
Some symptoms include blotchy red rash, fever, cough, runny nose and aches.
The best way to prevent measles is to get vaccinated.
