The University of Hawaii assumes ownership of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope today.

The telescope on Mauna Kea was operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

The council announced in 2012 it would be ceasing control of the telescope because of financial constraints.

The 35-year-old telescope has made several “world-leading discoveries,” according to a press release, including detection of weak emissions from brown dwarfs and identification of the most distant quasar known.
