HONOLULU (AP) — The state’s epidemiologist says health officials are concerned measles could spread through the islands.
Dr. Sarah Parker said in an announcement additional cases detected this week show how quickly measles can spread.
The Department of Health says the best way to prevent measles is to get a vaccination.
The department Thursday confirmed four more cases of measles on Maui and Kauai.
The department last week reported one case on Maui and two on Kauai. All involved young adults who had not been vaccinated and who had traveled to the Philippines or Indonesia and Malaysia.
The Centers for Disease Control says the highly contagious respiratory disease causes fever, runny nose, cough and a rash all over the body.
