HONOLULU (AP) — Voter turnout in Hawaii reached a record low Tuesday when just 52 percent of registered voters turned in ballots at the polls.
The nearest low-point in turnout for a general election in Hawaii was in 2006. That’s when 53 percent of registered voters cast ballots and chose Republican Linda Lingle as governor.
Voter turnout has declined steadily since Hawaii became a state. In 1959, nearly 94 percent of voters cast ballots in the general election.
When the state voted in 2008 to send Hawaii-born President Barack Obama to the White House, about 66 percent of voters made it to the polls.
