In commemoration of the 500th birthday of St. Teresa of Avila and the year-long anniversary celebration as called for by the church, a once-a-month study group is being formed at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Papaikou.

In commemoration of the 500th birthday of St. Teresa of Avila and the year-long anniversary celebration as called for by the church, a once-a-month study group is being formed at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Papaikou.

The study group’s purspose is to examine the saint’s seminal work on inner prayer and the mystical union with God known as the “Interior Castle.”

Materials to be used in the study will include the original text, a reader’s guide and commentary, with applications to life today, and the viewing of an award-winning film about the saint’s life.

An introductory session was hosted Tuesday in the parish hall. The course is free, except for the book, which costs $7, used, or $15, new.

The next session is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Teresa of Avila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, baptized as Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada on March 28, 1515, died Oct. 4, 1582.

She was a prominent Spanish mystic, Roman Catholic saint, Carmelite nun, an author of the Counter Reformation and theologian of contemplative life through mental prayer.
