Military studies alternative energy
HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Navy is putting millions of dollars into renewable energy research in Hawaii.
The Defense Department is the largest energy consumer in the U.S., and has long been worried about having to rely on expensive fuel oil for military operations.
The executive director of the Applied Research Laboratory at the University of Hawaii sai the lab has seen project funding rise from $7.9 million in 2013 to more than $20 million.
The lab received funding this year to test wave energy conversion devices and study electrical grids at three military bases in hopes of using more alternative energy.
By 2020, the Navy wants half of its total energy consumption to come from alternative sources.
