Kahilu Theatre in Waimea hosts the third “APPLAUSE from the Kahilu ” — a showcase of Hawaii Island artists recorded for broadcast by Hawaii Public Radio — Sunday at 4 p.m.
This Sunday afternoon concert features two talented bands. Opening is the smooth island sounds of Kohala, followed by the funky Latin vibrations of Leche de Tigre.
APPLAUSE 3 will be hosted on air and on stage by Tim Bostock, Kahilu’s artistic director.
The music of Kohala is an acoustic blend of folk, island and jazz. The trio consists of Grammy winner Charles Michael Brotman, who performs a classical style on nylon strings, plus Rupert Tripp Jr. and Charlie Recaido, who have a distinct finger picking style on steel-string guitars.
The trio has performed extensively throughout concert halls in Japan and the mainland U.S.
After intermission, Leche de Tigre will take the stage with Latin gypsy funk laced with rock influences.
Band members include Dan Brauer on guitar and vocals, Chris Wilson on drums, Robby Malovic on bass, Lee Motter on vocals, Dave Weaver on guitar and Michaeloha Elam on trumpet.
Tickets range from $5 to $20, and are available via online at www.kahilutheatre.org, by calling 885-6868 or at the Kahilu box office 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Hawaii Public Radio will broadcast the show Dec. 18. The second APPLAUSE concert, with Amy Mills, The Magic Strings Quartet and the Bill Noble Quintet will be broadcast on HPR on Nov. 23.
