Tanker accident closes Bayfront Highway

Bayfront Highway in Hilo was shut down Friday morning after jet fuel spilled on the roadway. According to a Hawaii County Fire Department report, a fuel truck accident at the intersection of Pauahi Street and Bayfront Highway about 5:30 a.m. resulted in the release of 2 gallons of jet fuel, which was contained on the roadway. The driver was uninjured, and the cause of the accident remained under investigation by the Hawaii Police Department on Friday afternoon. The remaining 8,000 gallons of jet fuel contained in the tanker truck was transferred to another truck and the vehicle was removed and the roadway was cleared and reopened by about 9:30 a.m.
