An overview of food security and agricultural sustainability through current economic drivers, methods and practices has been the subject of a series of conversations recently hosted by the Hilo-Hamakua Community Development Corporation.

Where do we stand currently, where do we want to go and how do we get there together? How do we work with government entities to form policies that build our agricultural capacities? Should we create collectives that help small producers contribute to the larger output? Do we develop resources of shared equipment or labor pools? Is there something we can do to lower energy costs?

The next steps and directions our community should take will be our next conversation.

Join us and be part of this critical discussion from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School cafeteria.

HHCDC will have its annual meeting, and we will gather as a community to “bring in the harvest” of thoughts we have shared and identify desirable goals. A potluck dinner, honoring our local gifts, and welcoming our new board of directors will prove to be a worthwhile experience.

This year’s Run for the Dry Forest at Pu‘u Wa‘a Wa‘a was a huge success. There were a record number of people who participated in the 10K and 5K — 227 finishers to be exact.

Even more people came to volunteer, promote educational displays and cheer on the runners. This event has steadily grown since the first Run for the Dry Forest in 2005, thanks to our hard-working staff, amazing volunteers, committed runners and support from the community.

To see photos from this year’s event, check out the Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a Facebook page. PATH is sending a big mahalo to all those who joined in Oct. 25. They couldn’t have done it without you.
