The Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles invites the public to come and celebrate the Feast Day of their Holy Sovereigns, King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma at 9 a.m. Sunday at the church at 1407 Kapiolani St. in Hilo.
The Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles invites the public to come and celebrate the Feast Day of their Holy Sovereigns, King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma at 9 a.m. Sunday at the church at 1407 Kapiolani St. in Hilo.
“The Holy Sovereigns Feast Day is our opportunity to celebrate all King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma did for the people of Hawaii,” said Holy Apostles Rector the Rev. Moki Hino. “The royal couple built up stronger alliances in the international community for Hawaii, especially with Britain. They allowed the Anglican Church (presently the Episcopal Church) to establish itself here in Hawaii.”
The couple also established The Queen’s Hospital — presently Queen’s Medical Center.
“Even when denied money by the government to establish the hospital, the royal couple themselves went house-to-house soliciting donations to build a place where the people of Hawaii could receive quality health care,” Hino said.
The celebration will feature a special Feast Day liturgy, a hula performance and the attendance of the Royal Order of Kamehameha. There also will be a free Hawaiian food lunch after the service.
“All are welcome,” Hino said.
