Free solar hot water heaters are being offered to some limited-income families by the Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council (HCEOC) and Hawaii Energy.
To qualify, a family must be three or more, with a HELCO account and using an electric heater. An applicant must be a homeowner, or have a landlord who will approve the installation, and willing to participate in an energy conservation program.
The family also must not have received a solar hot water system or refrigerator from HCEOC since 1999.
It is the goal of HCEOC and Hawaii Energy to install solar hot water systems as part of reducing the electric bills of disadvantaged households. Heating water makes up 30-40 percent of the average home electric bill.
Families must participate in an energy efficiency class or have an energy audit of their home to qualify.
For further information or to apply, call Mary Finley at HCEOC at 961-2681, ext. 301, or Sheree Maldonado at ext. 304, or email smaldonado.hceoc@hawaii.rr.com.
