The Royal Order of Kamehameha I, Mamalahoa (Hilo Chapter) will celebrate Ka La Ku’oko’a (Hawaiian Independence Day) at the Kamehameha statue in Wailoa River State Park on Friday starting at 11:30 a.m.
Members of the Royal Order will stand vigil with Hawaiian flags as they encircle King Kamehameha. There will be traditional oli and pule and the singing of Hawai’i Pono’i. At noon, the Anglo-Franco proclamation that formally recognized Hawaiian Independence, by King Louis-Philippe and Queen Victoria, on Nov. 28, 1843 at the Court of London, will be announced.
The public is invited to join in the celebration with their Hawaiian flags and are asked to remain on the ground level surrounding the King Kamehameha statue. Following the closing of the formal ceremony at 1 p.m., a kanikapila by all in the old Hawaiian style is encouraged, said spokesman David Heaukulani.
