Hakalau artist Eve Furchgott invites the public to her annual open studio and holiday art sale in Wailea town on three dates this holiday season — Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 13-14, and Sunday, Dec. 28.

Furchgott, an award-winning East Hawaii artist and illustrator, works in varied media, focusing in recent times on printmaking in the forms of moku hanga (Japanese woodblock prints) and monotypes. Her art has been collected by the State Foundation for Culture and the Arts and is available in several galleries, but many of the pieces on display in her studio have not been shown before.

Furchgott describes her art this way: “My work is about parts of my everyday life — animals, landscapes, people, plants, fruits and vegetables; nature. Most of my pieces begin with a drawing or sketch of something I’ve noticed that has caught my attention, or a drawing made from a photo I’ve taken. I rely more on observation than imagination, though in observing, what I am really looking for is that moment when the ordinary suddenly reveals itself as extraordinary, timeless, even sublime.”

In addition to original block and monoprints, paintings, pastels, giclée prints, holiday cards and note cards, this year’s open studio will feature Hawaiian children’s storybooks (bilingual) and an illustrated Hawaiian vocabulary/word book, all illustrated by Furchgott and available for the first time. The sale also will offer a number of holiday specials. The holiday open studio sessions offer a rare opportunity to meet and talk story with the artist in her natural environment, and a chance to pick up some beautiful, unique gifts.

Furchgott’s studio is located at 29-2101 Mamalahoa Highway in Hakalau, in old Wailea town, in a plantation-era building. From Hilo, turn off Highway 19 just past the 15-mile marker onto Chin Chuck Road; turn left right away onto the old highway heading back towards Hilo, and continue about a half mile. Studio is across from the old Fujii (Blue Kalo) bakery, a few doors away from Akiko’s B&B.

Stop by on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 13-14, from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 28, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. (This second date coincides with Akiko’s annual mochi pounding festival in Wailea.) For more information, call 963-6313; email even@hawaii.rr.com; visit the website, blueheron1.com.
