HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell has expanded the city’s sit-lie ban to commercial districts outside Waikiki.
Caldwell signed Bill 48 Tuesday in Chinatown surrounded by business owners who welcome the change.
Caldwell says the bill is about keeping sidewalks open for their intended use — walking.
The bill prohibits reclining on sidewalks between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. in several Oahu areas. It follows a ban passed for Waikiki in September which Caldwell says has worked miracles.
Assistant Police Chief Clayton Kau says 262 warnings and 72 citations have been issued since the Waikiki ban went into effect.
The citations carry a fine of up to $1,000 and up to 30 days in jail.
Advocates for homeless families say the prohibitions make it harder for people to get out of poverty.
