The Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Committee recently announced the 34th anniversary birthday commemoration in honor of the civil rights leader is scheduled for noon Sunday, Jan. 18, with a community celebration, program and potluck to be included in the day’s celebrations.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Committee recently announced the 34th anniversary birthday commemoration in honor of the civil rights leader is scheduled for noon Sunday, Jan. 18, with a community celebration, program and potluck to be included in the day’s celebrations.

This event is free and open to the public.

The celebration will take place at the Old Kona Airport Beach Park Makeo pavilion, aka the big pavilion. Those who attend are asked to bring a dish to share.

The program will consist of art, poetry, singing, bands, hula and speeches presented by students from local schools.

Other performers will be the Aloha Teen Theater, the County Band, the Kona Choral Society and Youth Group, the Martin Luther King Interfaith Choir and Binti Bailey, a local entertainer and MLK committee member.

This celebration, the history and experience of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be inspirational as well as educational.

The observance of this event in Kailua-Kona was started 34 years ago in 1981 by the late Kona resident Frank Bramlett along with Mamie Bramlett, Virginia Halliday and Kathy Simmons.

The event has grown to include many volunteers and a committee from the community to make this a successful celebration each year.
