On Nov. 19, our much-beloved “Garden Guy,” Dr. Nick Sakovich, announced that that day’s column would be his last entry in the Tribune-Herald for a while.
Dr. Sakovich wrote it was time for a needed break and to allow his “editor” wife more free time. This last point confirms: With a successful man there is an even MORE successful woman.
Given all the particulars to farming and gardening on the Big Island, Dr. Sakovich’s input was invaluable. He espoused a fair balanced between traditional farming methods and a scientific approach to agriculture.
Sir: You will be missed.

Give to charity
In 1957, I was U.S. Army Sergeant stationed in Tokyo. My daughter, Pamela Ellen, passed away. I needed $250 to return her little body to the states for burial. I didn’t have it.
The Army Emergency fund turned me down. The Red Cross turned me down. The Salvation Army didn’t turn me down. They gave me the $250 as a grant, and I was able to send Pamela back to Stockton, Calif., her final resting place.
I NEVER pass a Salvation Army Christmas donation bucket without remembering their kindness, and I am grateful to be able to help them as they continue to help others in need.
