Hawaii Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK) has honored Donna Saiki as an honorary member of this international organization of women educators dedicated to educational excellence, altruism and world understanding. The Big Island Delta chapter nominated Saiki for this distinguished and lifetime award which was celebrated on Oct. 25 at the Hilo Bay Cafe as part of National ADK month.

State President Naomi Yap, Delta chapter President Claire Seu, Mayor Billy Kenoi representatives Charmaine Shigemura and Kaycie Saiki presented the retired school administrator with the ADK honorary citation and the mayor’s proclamation of achievement. Kenoi also proclaimed October as International Alpha Delta Kappa Month.

“Donna Saiki has been tireless in her contributions to the public education system and volunteer work with the Pacific Tsunami Museum and other community and civic responsibilities. She was the principal at Keaukaha Elementary School, Waiakea Intermediate School and Hilo High School before retiring from public service after 30 years in the Hawaii school systems,” said spokeswoman Rae Yamanaka.

“She then volunteered to be the executive director for the Pacific Tsunami Museum for 18 years of dedicated work to create and build the museum into an internationally recognized center for tsumani information and research. Now that she has ‘retired’ for the second time, you can find Donna participating in church activities at Malia Puka O Kalani and helping at the Food Pantry in her Keaukaha community.

“Donna is a wonderful example of the major goals of Alpha Delta Kappa: to give recognition to outstanding educators, to build a fraternal fellowship among educators adding to their effectiveness in promoting excellence in education, to establish high standards of education, to promote educational and charitable projects and activities enriching the lives of individuals everywhere and assisting these individuals into happy, constructive and fulfilling lives.”
